Cụm từ “Passive Voice with Modals” có nghĩa là câu bị động sử dụng động từ khuyết thiếu (modals).
Passive Voice (câu bị động): Là cấu trúc câu nhấn mạnh vào hành động hoặc đối tượng chịu tác động, thay vì người thực hiện hành động.
Eg: The book was read by Mary (Cuốn sách được đọc bởi Mary).
Modals (động từ khuyết thiếu): Là các động từ như can, could, may, might, must, should, will, would… dùng để diễn đạt khả năng, sự cần thiết, nghĩa vụ, hay dự đoán.
Eg: She can swim (Cô ấy có thể bơi).
Passive Voice with Modals: Khi kết hợp cả hai, ta có công thức:
Subject + modal + be + V(3/ed)
“Passive Voice with Modals” là cách viết câu bị động khi trong câu có động từ khuyết thiếu.
Active: They can solve the problem.
=> Passive: The problem can be solved.
Active: We must finish the report.
=> Passive: The report must be finished.
Active: She should clean the room.
=> Passive: The room should be cleaned.
